Normal maps in BC5U format are still not supported by Maniaplanet. I have not yet tested whether this has been corrected in the meantime.ĮDIT: I just tested it again after all. The textures were displayed without 3D effect and much too dark. In my last test, ManiaPlanet could not interpret such a marked DDS file correctly either. The tool may open Normal maps correctly, but does not save it conform (it stores the BC5U FourCC as D3DFMT enumeration instead of a DXGI_FORMAT enumeration in the extended header). I cannot recommend using the Intel DDS Texture Works plugin to save the NormalMap, as described here as an alternative. Then you don't have the problem that the NormalMap is not opened correctly (see the initial posting of Fix). I also always create the NormalMap directly from the DiffuseMap (edited for the creation of the NormalMap). 10.īefore creating the NormalMap, you should already have a correctly created SpecularMap so that you can better see the 3D effect. I normally use 3 to 6, but in very few exceptional cases I increase the value to max. Only the value of 30 for the scale is significantly too high.
Just rename to dds before putting back into game.This guide to quickly create a NormalMap is still useable. You might have to rename a file as dds2 to open within and then save as dds2 to use all the available options but it can read and write these formats so that is good to add into the available options. Really helps for those without photoshop is Ĭombined with this plugin. I've seen many people ask for this so hopefully placing it in tutorials will help stop more threadsĪnother simple option. I also hope someone will be able to tell whether or not it is possible to get the files to be previewed as a thumbnail in file explorer because idk why they are just blank thumbnails assigned to whatever program you default open them with (in this case just photoshop squares that say ps) I've seen a few programs that can view this type of compression but so far things like plugins for gimp I haven't found when I first went looking to figure this out. I will gladly take suggestions on other programs and edit this post as needed. You may need to do a similar process to even open these files to begin with in that case refer to the first picture and do the same but select "Open As." ^ Click save as type drop down menu and find this^ Some of the new textures are BC7 compression so you need a newer plugin for photoshop to be able to open and view them
